A panel discussion led by Rise’s Brian Hurd will discuss how the work of planners has evolved over time and how our region has been affected as a result. Panel will also explore how the changing scope of work affects how the community views planners and the planning profession.
The composition of government planning departments

A panel discussion led by Rise’s John Cruz will address what work is being done by government planning departments around the region and if they are properly addressing resident needs in the process.
The “Street Corner” Thesis: The Need for a Lead Catalyst for Implementation

Rise will give a presentation and lead a discussion around the how the “Street Corner” thesis is applicable in St. Louis, and why need to partner with local nonprofits is essential to do the most effective planning work.
Moving from Community Engagement to Community Building to Community Empowerment

A discussion around community engagement will explore how planners should be working with their communities and what are the appropriate steps needed in order to ensure that engagement is successful in empowering communities.

Dr. Tom Burroughs is the Dean of the College for Public Health and Social Justice at Saint Louis University and the Executive Director and Professor at the Saint Louis University Center for Health Outcomes Research. The Saint Louis University Urban Planning and Development Program is within the College for Public Health and Social Justice.

Regionalism in the St. Louis Region by Dr. Joanna Ganning
Dr. Ganning is an Assistant Professor in the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University. Dr. Ganning’s specialty is urban economic development, with a focus on shrinking cities and legacy cities. Dr. Ganning’s research has prompted changes to local zoning codes, changes to transit authority systems. Dr. Ganning is a former associate professor with the Urban Planning and Development Program at Saint Louis University.
