Janet Buchanan with Heartlands Conservancy and Matt Brandmeyer with Madison County will provide an overview of their stormwater management and watershed planning efforts in Madison County. The County has undertaken an innovative, multi-year effort to identify flooding and water quality issues within local watersheds. The process identifies regulatory changes, ongoing program initiatives, and specific construction projects for achieving the plans’ objectives. The speakers will provide insights into the management framework, planning process, and their implementation strategy.
Speakers: Janet Buchanan
Janet Buchanan is an environmental planning and policy professional with a focus on water resources. Janet joined HeartLands Conservancy in 2013 and since then has worked to bring together environmental science, policy analysis, mapping, and stakeholder outreach to address multifaceted natural resource issues in southwestern Illinois. Janet has initiated and managed a variety of projects concerning watershed planning, water quality, flood damage prevention policy, community surveys, riparian buffers, and green infrastructure. She received a Master of Science in Natural Resources and Environment from the University of Michigan, 2013, and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from Principia College in 2010.
Matt Brandmeyer, AICP, Madison County, IL, Planning and Development Administrator
Matt Brandmeyer has been a professional planner for 19 years. He currently serves as the Planning and Development Administrator for Madison County. He was previously the Planning Director for Creve Coeur, MO and a Project Planner for Chesterfield, MO. Between that time, Matt was part of the management team for The Koman Group, a private real estate developer, and owned his own project management company. Matt has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a Master’s degree in Urban Planning and Real Estate Development from Saint Louis University. He has also completed the Masters of Public Administration curriculum at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Matt has been a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and a Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) since 2003.
